Steven universe gems4/1/2023 ![]() ![]() The only reason they don't change those qualities and deviate depending on their unique personality quirks is because Homeworld demands conformity and uniformity. I think, though, that certain gem types have certain qualities which we perceive as masculine or feminine or neutral, kind of like how Sapphire = feminine and Ruby = masculine and Garnet = neutral but still kinda leaning towards feminine a bit. Frankly I'd love it if Yellow Diamond was the single masculine overlord in charge of all gem reproduction, and I kind of suspect that this is very close to the role she plays in addition to being in charge of the military. They don't reproduce sexually, so why would they need different genders or sexes? (Or genitalia, for that matter, but Stephen Galaxy fans ignore the hell out of that lol). I would have preferred it if the gems used they/them, but it would have been slightly confusing for kids who haven't learned or been taught that 'they' can refer to a singular person as well as plural.Īnd I think this is just theory still but I assume they "plant" gem shards to grow new gems, and they need very specific conditions and nutrients, hence why Earth was a growing colony, and why gems don't have a gender binary. It's entirely possible to use she/her pronouns without identifying as or being biologically female. Sugar wanted to make a show with a bevy of female characters, she wanted to address representation issues, she wanted to deconstruct gender tropes (something the show lampshades with its G.A.L.S toy line, Girls Against Lazy Stereotypes) look at any number of interviews and appearances she has done (or by other Crewniverse members for that matter) and you'll see a pattern in terms of what is important to her in trying to tell this story. This a decision that has been made on external reasonings. Internally, in-show, canon-wise, whatever you want to call it I don't think we'll get an answer. So in creating this show, the Gems being female emphasises the 'littler brother/big sister' relationship Steven is supposed to have with them (you saw this a lot in the early press stuff for the show and the adverts: "Steven as the proverbial little brother!", despite the fact the fans pretty quickly read the relationship the Gems have to him as maternal). ![]() Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Ruby are thusly all seen as self-admitted shades of herself (where Sapphire is seen to be Ian JQ).
